Family Based Green Cards

ResourcesLawful permanent residency allows a foreign national to live and work in the United States indefinitely. This status is also known as "immigrant status," "LPR status," or "green card status."

The law provides for several categories of family based immigrant categories. "Immediate relatives" are defined as parents of U.S. citizens who are over 21, spouses of U.S. citizens, and unmarried, under the age of 21 children of U.S. citizens. Immediate relatives are not subject to quota limitations.

Other relatives who may immigrate on the strength of a family relationship and adult unmarried and married children of U.S. citizens, siblings of U.S. citizens, and spouses and unmarried children of lawful permanent residents.
